Rights Respecting
Schools Award
Children's Rights at Woodhouse
As part of our journey towards achieving the Silver Rights Respecting School Award, we will be choosing a different article from the Convention on the Rights of the Child each month to focus on and learn about.
For November, our article of the month has been Article 42: Knowledge of Rights.
This article is all about the children knowing what their rights are, knowing how to make sure they're being met and also what the children can do if they think their rights aren't being met. Children across the whole school have participated in this and now have a wider knowledge of what their rights are.
In Year 6, we have been discussing what our rights are in our RE lessons. We started by thinking about what we thought was unfair in our own lives and then compared our ideas with what we could consider to be unfair in different cultures from looking at a poem about life in South Africa. We learnt about how lucky we are to have rights such as an education, feeling safe and not being exploited because we now know that in some countries children are denied their rights. We also learnt about Apartheid and how people were treated differently and denied their rights because of the colour of their skin.
In our theme lessons, we have been learning about article 38 which is all about how as children we should not be exploited. However, in Victorian times children were exploited on a daily basis and were forced to work in Mills, coal mines and in factories. To show our understanding, we created posters on the top 5 hazards and we have also written a diary from the point of view of Jim Jarvis ( a boy who was forced to work in the workhouse). Our posters are still a work in progress but here you can see an example of one of our diaries.

Article 42 of the UNCRC says that all children, young people and adults should know about our rights. It is important that we understand our rights and adults must protect our rights.
