Back to School - Online Safety Tips for Children

< Back to the news

The online world presents different risks for children and young people at each phase of their development. As they progress through the school years, pupils encounter a shifting digital landscape which can prove hazardous and unfamiliar. Parents too, therefore, can find themselves uninformed and unprepared for these new areas of the internet their young ones are exploring.

For our #WakeUpWednesday guide this week, we’ve pulled together a collection of general best-practice pointers for children and young people to help keep them safe when they’re using the internet for schoolwork and recreation. From learning to be wary of fake news to managing screen time and protecting their devices’ security, these tips are a great online safety refresher!

A new school year always holds its share of potentially harmful online crazes, games and apps. Some may be unexpected risks out of leftfield (although we have several suspects already on our radar); others are perennials like TikTok, Call of Duty or Instagram, presenting similar hazards to a different audience as each year group becomes old enough to be fascinated by them.

What we can confidently predict, however, is that National Online Safety will continue to bring you the latest insights and analysis of the games, apps and devices that have got children talking. For the start of term, this week’s #WakeUpWednesday guide summarises some excellent all-purpose tips to keep young people safe online throughout the 2021/22 academic year.
